Greeting

On September 7, 2026, XRISM celebrated the third anniversary of its launch. Despite the unexpected challenge of operating Resolve with its gate valve still closed, its spectral performance in the Fe-K band has far exceeded the performance requirements, allowing us to achieve many of the mission’s original science objectives. Needless to say, none of this would have been possible without the tremendous efforts and support of our community. As XRISM enters its fourth year, we are taking on new approaches to science operations, including strategic large-scale observing programs ("Key Program"), to address the new scientific questions that have emerged from our observations so far. Our goal is not for XRISM to be remembered simply as “a mission that observed many different objects and produced some nice results.” We want to build a coherent body of scientific results that makes it clear to everyone what XRISM has brought to astrophysics as a whole. I hope many of you will join us as XRISM takes on these new challenges. And most importantly, let’s enjoy the science!


X線分光撮像衛星(XRISM)は2026年9月7日に打上げから3周年を迎えました。主力検出器のResolveは、ゲートバルブ未開放というトラブルに見舞われながらも、鉄K帯域での分光性能が要求値を大きく上回ったこともあり、当初の科学目標の多くを達成できました。言うまでもなく、コミュニティの皆様のご尽力があってのことです。4年目に入ったXRISMは、これまでの観測で直面した新たな科学課題を解決すべく、戦略的な大型科学観測プログラムなどの新たな科学運用にも取り組みます。それらを通して「いろんな天体を観測してそこそこの成果が出たミッション」ではなく、「XRISMが宇宙物理学全体に対して何をもたらしたか」が誰の目にもわかるような、体系的な科学成果を創出していきたいと考えています。XRISMの新たな挑戦に、是非みなさんも参加してください。そして、サイエンスを楽しみましょう!

Dear XRISM users.

X-Ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM) is the seventh Japanese X-ray observatory exploring the world of X-ray imaging and high-resolution spectroscopy, following ASTRO-H “Hitomi.” XRISM is an astrophysical satellite equipped with a long-waited X-ray micro-calorimeter and a conventional and reliable X-ray wide-field CCD camera on the focal plane of X-ray Mirrors. We believe the combination will bring the epoch-making and reliable results to you, XRISM users. The new vision of astrophysics you encounter may be too novel to cook only with the tools we prepare. We want to encourage the XRISM user community to develop new analysis tools or methods to explore the world of XRISM.

X線分光撮像衛星(XRISM)は、ASTRO-H「ひとみ」を引き継ぎ、X線超高分解能撮像分光で新しい宇宙を切り拓く、我が国7番目のX線天文衛星です。XRISMは、時代を画するX線マイクロカロリメータをはじめ、長年の実績をもとに開発され信頼性をそなえた広視野のCCDカメラも搭載した、多くの研究者・技術者の長年にわたる開発の精華です。皆様には、XRISMの能力を最大限に生かし、新しくかつ確実な観測成果を挙げていただけるものと信じております。しかしながら、新しい装置が見せる新しい宇宙は、あらかじめ開発者が用意した道具だけでは、味わい尽くせないかもしれません。新しいモデルや新しい解析方法が必要になることもあるでしょう。ぜひ、XRISMをとことん活用するとともに、皆様の議論・要望・貢献によってコミュニティを成長させていただければと、願っております。XRISMの見せる宇宙をお楽しみいただければ幸いです。

September 7, 2026

As XRISM begins its next 3.5 years of operations, Hiroya Yamaguchi has been appointed as the new Principal Investigator (PI). Makoto Tashiro, who previously served as PI, has been appointed as Mission Scientist.

September 4, 2026

The XRISM project is pleased to announce the first Key Program (KP) Call for Proposal. The KP is intended to establish the long-term scientific legacy of XRISM through strategically designed large observing programs that address fundamental scientific question and produce benchmark datasets for the broader astronomical community. The XRISM Project invites proposals from the worldwide scientific community. Details are described on this page.
