Dear XRISM users.

X-Ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM) is the seventh Japanese X-ray observatory exploring the world of X-ray imaging and high-resolution spectroscopy, following ASTRO-H “Hitomi.” XRISM is an astrophysical satellite equipped with a long-waited X-ray micro-calorimeter and a conventional and reliable X-ray wide-field CCD camera on the focal plane of X-ray Mirrors. We believe the combination will bring the epoch-making and reliable results to you, XRISM users. The new vision of astrophysics you encounter may be too novel to cook only with the tools we prepare. We want to encourage the XRISM user community to develop new analysis tools or methods to explore the world of XRISM.

We are pleased to release the XRISM Proposers Observatoy Guide for the XRISM Cycle-1 Guest Observation program. See this page for XRISM GO-1 information.

We are pleased to release the XRISM Early Release data for those who are considering submitting a proposal for the XRISM Cycle-1 G uest Observation program. The data include X-ray images and spectra obtained during the commissioning or calibration operations of the instr uments aboard XRISM, the Resolve and Xtend. The data are in the FITS format, widely used in the field of astronomy. The first data release is Perseus cluster core : Resolve spectrum . Note that the ER data are not yet fully calibrated and corrected but are released on a trial basis for reference purposes in proposing observations. Do not use this data for scientific research.

The Resolve aperture door status and a request for the proposals for the guest observer program cycle-1

The XRISM Resolve instrument’s Gate Valve (X-ray aperture door) has not opened on multiple attempts. The Gate Valve blocks soft X-rays, shifting Resolve’s energy band from 0.3 - 12 keV to 1.7 - 12 keV. While the XRISM team will continue to assess different approaches to opening the Gate Valve, the Guest Observer Cycle-1 program will be carried out with the closed Gate Valve configuration. Proposals must justify the science case given the closed Gate Valve and limited in the energy band. The relevant response function files and technical information will be provided via the XRISM website (https://xrism.isas.jaxa.jp/research/proposer/obsplan/index.html). The proposal due remains the same – April 4, 16:30JST.

XRISM Guest Observer (GO) Program Cycle 1 (AO-1) Due Date Delayed to April 4, 2024

Since XRISM is still in commissioning phase, JAXA, NASA, and ESA decided to postpone the due date for the AO-1 proposal to April 4th, 2024. The Proposer's Observatory Guide and the revised response functions with the necessary modifications will be released around late January based on the results of the initial on-orbit operations.

October 30, 2023

The Resolve Modulated X-ray Source (MXS) has been activated and is producing X-rays to be used for full array calibration and energy gain monitoring.

October 25, 2023

Xtend SXI has been successfully turned on. The four CCDs have reached the required operational temperatures, and X-rays are being detected from the internal calibration sources. Xtend is expected to begin observing celestial objects soon.

October 16, 2023

The Resolve dewar has now been cooled with all cryocoolers and the 1st and 2nd stage ADRs. The temperatures and cooling powers are all nominal. The full array of detector pixels successfully detected X-rays from the calibration source on the Filter Wheel and shows excellent uniformity, with better than 5 eV energy resolution.

After reaching the required operational temperature in the Resolve dewar, the adiabatic demagnetization magnetic refrigerators (ADR) were activated, and the target temperature of 0.050 K for the array stage was achieved.

September 11, 2023

The electronics boxes for the Resolve instrument have been powered ON. The XBOX is providing readout of the anticoincidence detector and providing data on the particle background, and the ADRC is reporting tempetures throughout the dewar. The XBOX will be used later in the mission to provide readout of the X-ray calorimeter array while the ADRC will be used to control the magnetic refrigerators to reach the 0.050 K operational temperature of the array. The spacecraft electronics are now controlling the temperatures of the two X-Ray Mirror Assemblies.

September 11, 2023

The critical operation period of XRISM had been ended. This is the period after the separation of the satellite from the launch vehicle until the satellite can maintain a stable and safe condition. XRISM has entered the commissioning period, which will last about three months to verify the functions of the satellite's onboard equipment.

September 7, 2023

During the launch of XRISM, the vent port of the helium cryostat was successfully opened to permit cooling of the liquid helium to the operational temperature of < 1.3K. The cryocoolers have been turned on after releasing the launch locks that protect the cryocoolers during launch. The internal dewar components will now begin to come into thermal equilibrium.
